- Repair roof leaks, or any other structural issues that can cause problems with moisture.
- Dispose of or relocate any old wood or construction debris that may be lying around on the ground near the building including under decks.
- Store firewood away from the building.
- Trim back tree limbs, bushes and brush from having contact with the building. Also keep mulch from contact with wood siding and other wood members.
- Keep gutters clean and flowing freely.
- Have a yearly exterior foundation treatment.
Rodents
- Good sanitation is a major factor in the prevention of and control of rodents. If trash is left outside bags should be put in trash containers with covers. Pet food should not be left outside over night.
- Doors and windows should close and seal tightly.
- Seal cracks and openings in the foundation.
- Check that louvered vents from driers and other appliances close properly.
- If rodents are a persistent problem, a regular service program to keep baits fresh will help.
Roaches
- Good sanitation is a major factor in the prevention and control of roaches. Food should be kept in sealed containers.
- If high humidity and moisture is a problem, a dehumidifier can help.
- Repair any plumbing leaks you may have under kitchen or bathroom cabinets.
Bedbugs
- Always be careful when obtaining used furniture. Learning what the signs of infestation are and inspecting furniture very thoroughly gives you the best chance of not bringing home bedbug infested furnishings.
- If you think you've been somewhere that has bedbugs on arriving home you may want to put removed clothing directly in the drier for at least thirty minutes if appropriate for that particular material.
- Launder any used clothing obtained immediately when brought into your home
- Before traveling learn what you can do to prevent bringing back bedbugs in your luggage and clothing.
- Educating yourself about the signs of a bedbug infestation can help you detect it in its early stages and make a needed treatment easier. There is much information available to help you to protect yourself.
Termites
- Make sure that wood elements of the structure are not in contact with the ground.
- Dispose of or relocate any old wood or construction debris that may be lying around on the ground near the building including under decks.
- Store firewood away from the building.
- Trim back tree limbs, bushes, and brush from having contact with the building. Also keep mulch from contact with wood siding and other wood members.
- Keep gutters clean and flowing freely.
- Direct water from gutters away from the structure keep outdoor faucets from dripping and anything else that may be necessary to keep the ground adjacent to the foundation from staying moist.
- Have a yearly exterior foundation treatment.
